Maize
Augustus
Maturity Group 11
This is still a consistently reliable variety in the ultra-early section, has now performed well for a number of years since being listed in 2015. There are now newer varieties that may out yield it but have yet to prove themselves as consistent.
Duxxburry
Maturity Group 11
Appeared on NIAB list in 2020 and is proving to be a firm favourite, it will give you earliness, reliability, yield and quality. It is set to be our biggest selling variety again for 2022 after another exceptional year in 2021, it will be available with a number of seed dressing. It has matched or bettered Augustus in both yield, earliness and quality in our trials over the last 4 years.
Glory
Maturity Group 10
Now having been withdrawn from NIAB trialling having been listed first in 2013 and proving itself to be Mr reliable. It’s proved to be consistent on all sites, this was our top seller for the many years, It still gives outstanding quality and yield, and is a firm favourite with those that grow it and has a loyal following. If growing maize for the first time this is the variety of choice.
Dignity
Maturity Group 10
This new variety that will not appear on a NIAB list until 2023, but has shown in trials to be a similar maturity to Glory. Having been grown commercially last year by a small number of growers it looks as if its popularity will grow due to its quality and yield matched with early vigour and maturity. This is one to definitely try this year.
Oxxgood
Maturity Group 8
Is proving itself to be a consistent variety in the early maturing section, is suitable to all soil types but does cope well on the lighter brashy ground. This has been one of our most popular varieties over the last 4 years. It’s grain yield and standing ability have given excellent results when used for grain maize, out yielding many varieties in this market.
SY Silverbull
Maturity Group 8
This is a new variety from Syngenta, looking at trial results it looks earlier than Nordicstar with a higher yield. It has a good disease rating but may not match that of Nordicstar, this would be one to try this year.
Autens
Maturity group 8
This variety was listed 2 years ago, it has an exceptional yield for its maturity group, within the south west I would pick a favourable site to grow this variety, where it will produce a large bulky crop.
SY Actual
Maturity group 7
A Syngenta variety that we know will have good disease tolerance. It had an exceptional year in 2020 and matured earlier than was anticipated giving very good yields. It does not suit early sowing but on a good site it will fill the clamp.
SY Nordicstar
Maturity group 7
This variety from Syngenta has an outstanding eyespot tolerance and still one of the best on all the NIAB lists, it combines quality with yield, that is maintained through to harvest due to its disease tolerance, if you suffer from eyespot and you can grow a later maturing variety then this should be your only choice.
