Grass
Well managed grassland is the backbone of a livestock businesses and crucial to profitability.
Grass Varieties
There is a vast choice when it comes to grass seed selection. The first port of call is the Recommended Grass and Clover lists which have figures for performance and disease scores. We have also gained a depth of knowledge of specific varieties for this region which gives us the confidence to recommend them to you to fit your exact needs, farming situation and to deliver the best performing grass leys.
We speak to all the breeders of grass and clover on the Recommended Lists and so are able to supply the best and most suitable varieties for our region and include them in our mixtures. In addition to yield and quality for a variety we put a big emphasis on disease resistance especially for Crown Rust and Drechslera which are major issues in the West Country.
CUSTOM GRASS MIXING
Pearce Seeds is the only grass seed merchant in the South West with the ability to mix grass seed and produce our own mixtures. We offer a bespoke mixing service rather than the “one size fits all approach” which comes with most premixed grass seed.
Having access to all the top Northern European Breeders we import all our seed as individual grass varieties. This gives us the ability to tailor make a grass ley according to each farming situation, even producing specific leys field by field. For every variety we include in a mix we consider the scores for Dry Matter Yield, ME, Heading Dates, and Disease resistance, with emphasis given to crown rust ratings and winter hardiness. By selecting from the recommended list of Herbage Varieties we only select the best material from the top breeders.
Using our specialised “Grass Calculator” our agronomists offer a fully bespoke service to plan a grass mixture showing you the quality and disease scores amongst other traits allowing you to compare and contrast different options. We believe this approach will ultimately give you the best leys for your farm.
