ORGANIC SPRING OATS

Elyann
A new variety with very high yields and a bold grain that has early maturity and short stiff straw. Outstanding kernel content makes it an interesting variety for the organic market – being reviewed by the end markets - it is receiving strong interest from millers for its excellent grain qualities, so awaiting decisions within the organic sector.

Canyon
Medium early with best mildew resistance and above average tolerance against BYDV Bold kernels and an above average hectolitre weight the good grain quality makes it suitable for a range of end markets including milling for human consumption and animal feed.

ORGANIC SPRING TRITICALE

Dublet
Our main spring variety that gives good yields and has good disease resistance especially to powdery mildew, brown rust, rhynchosporium and ear fusarium. Excellent specific weight which gave the best bushel weight in Pearce Seeds organic 2017 trials as well being a high yielding variety. It also has good lodging score. Triticale can be a more vigorous crop than wheat so could offer greater competition against weeds.

ORGANIC SPRING WHEAT

Mulika
Growers of organic spring wheat often target the bread making market. Mulika, a group 1 milling wheat was second in yield in Pearce Organis Trials with one of the best bushel weights in the wheat trial. Mulika grows well under organic conditions and can give protein content of >12%, a key factor required for milling wheat. Wheat with less than 12% protein is unlikely to make good bread as the dough structure does not have enough gluten. It is resistant to OWBM but only has a moderate resistance to Septoria (6) but good resistance to Mildew and Yellow Rust (both 7)

ORGANIC SPRING BARLEY

Westminster
Popular in the organic sector with long, stiff straw and excellent all round disease resistance combined with very high specific weight. This makes it a great choice as a feed wheat but also accepted by some end users as a malting barley. Although lower yielding, it is a reliable variety that has performed consistently on-farm, producing a very good grain sample with very good straw attributes that are required by livestock holdings. High specific weight and low sieving losses, with good lodging and brackling resistance.

Laureate
Top yeilding in Pearce Organic 2017 trials and looking good through the growing season. It has a very good agronomic profile on brackling (8) and Mildew (8). It is fully approved by the IBD for brewing and distilling and in the past organic maltsters have stayed with Westminster and Propino but they are now looking to try this new variety. It is also suitable for the feed barley position as well with high yields and good disease specification, 6 for both Rynchosporium and Ramularia.

ORGANIC WINTER OATS

Mascani
Mascani is the No.1 UK variety both organically and conventionally. It offers high bushel weights, with low screenings and excellent grain quality. It is early to mature and has excellent disease resistance, particularly to crown rust. The good grain quality of it continues to ensure its popularity with millers.

ORGANIC WINTER BARLEY

Cassia
Not the highest yield in 2017 Pearce Seeds organic trials but a superb specific weight to give the insurance of a good feed barley with a bold-grained, it is free-tillering and easy to grow with an ability to hold on to green leaf through the grain-fill period helps boost yields. KWS Cassia is medium height with stiff straw.

ORGANIC WINTER RYE

Forage rye is a cereal crop which is different to the grain types. Grazing rye varieties are selected as they are leafy, have deep roots and grow strongly in the autumn. It is ideal for those requiring a competitive over winter cover, for growers wishing to double crops, or for farmers who need an early cut of silage. Rye is one of the most effective crops for catching nitrogen left by a previous crop. Grain rye offers big grains with high protein content - some grain ryes can be used for grazing.

ORGANIC WINTER WHEAT

Olympus
Top yielding in Pearce Seeds 2017 organic trials the variety offers a good option for the feed market, with stiff straw and an excellent overall disease resistant package with good grain quality.

Anapolis
An interesting feed wheat that came 2nd in Pearce Seeds organic trials with very good bushel weight. Excellent disease profile with an 8 for Fusarium, a 6 for Septoria and 9 for Yellow Rust gives it a good disease profile which has helped it perform in the organic trials. It looked clean throughout its growing season and with its suitability for late drilling it does well in an organic situation.

Crispin
A good feed wheat demonstrating a vigorous growth habit while showing good resistance to the foliar diseases, mildew and yellow rust. The variety was amongst the higher yielding varieties in our 2017 organic trials.

Zyatt
In our organic trials this new milling wheat showed a good combination of yield and specific weight – interesting to have a bread-making wheat capable of producing protein requirements and be supported with a decent yield. Only the first year of data but worth looking at again to assess its quality organically. Does well in the west against feed wheat yields as well with very high disease ratings.

Siskin
Although not the highest yielding in our south west trials - but only one year of data - it still offered good yields and demonstrated a vigorous growth habit so it can get away quickly and out-compete the weeds while showing good resistance to the foliar diseases with top resistence for yellow rust and mildew and with a 6.8 for septoria makes it a good for the South West choice.
