Watching Crops in a Difficult Season

Watching Crops in a Difficult Season

Rapid plant growth needs a close watch for disease

With rapid plant growth now taking place on most crops following fertilization and warm dry weather it is easy to assume all is well BUT remember that the prolonged wet spell will have triggered septoria which can take up to 21 days to show as it slowly incubates in the plant. Surprisingly yellow rust is already showing in the susceptible variety Revelation (drier weather disease).

A lot of crops missed T0 as weather/ground conditions never allowed application hence the pressure is now firmly on the T1 application – don’t wait and ensure that it is a robust one - NOT the season to cut back!

Picture 1 shows the Wheat Trials Plots at the Pearce Seeds trials farm in Dorset looking very health BUT Picture 2 shows the yellow rust clearly developing – with this rush of soft new growth diseases will have a field day!
