2015 Open Days

2015 Open Days

Pearce Seeds will be hosting their fifth annual open day at their trials facility, Plumber Farm near Sturminster Newton in Dorset on Wednesday 17 June 2015. Pearce Seeds and Smith Gore will also be hosting Seed Production events in Hampshire in conjunction with some of our seed growers. Wednesday 3 June 2015 will see a visit to Corhampton Lane farm and Tuesday 23 June 2015 to Rookery Farm near Stockbridge.

This year, one field has been dedicated to the open day where the trials team have prepared demonstrations plots representative of all the research undertaken on the farm.  On show will be variety plots of grass, cereals, pulses and OSR as well as forage and grass demonstration plots, greening crops and game cover crops. This demonstration field has been sponsored by Syngenta UK who are also trialling nitrogen fertiliser timings and various fungicide programmes on hybrid barley.

As the trials farm and the open day has evolved, Pearce Seeds have improved the experience at the open day.  Rather than take attendees on a full tour of the site, they can now see a snap shot of what goes on at the trials facility in one field and further explore in depth the areas that interest them.

Pearce Seeds have been striving for Plumber Farm to be a centre of agricultural excellence in the South West, and have had some interesting results from the trials facility enabling their agronomists and farmers in the region to benefit from localised trials work.

Outside of the demonstration field the trials site is still utilised to undertake high value seed replication for breeders, and disease observation plots, of which there are over 4,000 1m2 plots that are used by breeders including Syngenta, Senova, Saaten Union, and Limagrain to assess new crosses which may be used in future breeding programmes. Plumber Farm is ORETO certified and used for efficacy testing as part of submissions made by chemical manufactures to CRD for new certifications of agrochemicals.

Tours of the whole site will be also available for those farmers wishing to see more than just the demonstration field.  As usual there will also be trade stands from chemical manufacturers, machinery supplies and local agribusinesses.
