Hybrids Give Top Performance

Hybrids Give Top Performance

Hybrid Barley has once again topped the trials at our Plumber Trials facility, with the wheats also producing some stunning results.

Pearce Seeds trials facility at Plumber hosts commercial trials for breeders and chemical companies and we also conduct our own investigations into what farming practices work on farms in the south and west. Unlike the official trials we are not trying to establish the pure genetic potential of a variety by excluding disease, but look at economic yield produced by the same agronomy packages we would be using with our farmer customers from Hampshire to Cornwall.

Winter barley was topped by Volume hybrid, which continues to outperform its daughter lines. Secondly, the highest placed non hybrid was Escadre. These two have outperformed the rest for all three years that Plumber has been operating.

Wheat: What many would have failed to predicted is the success of hybrid wheat. Pearce Seeds conducted a strip trial of 3 hybrids against a control of JB Diego late sown and also included Hystar in the standard replicated yield trials sown in early October. In the late sown, Hystar gave the same yield (10.37 tonnes a hectare) as JB Diego despite the hybrid-sowing rate of 250 seeds against 450 seeds a square metre. Another hybrid Hytec reached 10.75 t/ ha. This trial was not replicated and planted mainly to look at the growth habits of the three very different hybrids. However in the replicated yield trials Hystar achieved 11.17 t / ha coming second of the “commercially available” varieties behind Horatio and a couple of coded lines. Both of these results challenge the view that hybrid wheat is still in a development phase, although with higher seed costs sites need to be selected with care to get an economic return from this technology.
