Beating the Bedding Disease Challenge

Published: Monday, November 20, 2017

The UK climate means that our animals will almost inevitably be housed at some stage during the farming year, increasing the challenge from diseases. Whether these are dairy cows in cubicles, ewes in lambing pens, calves in individual or group hutches or any one of the number of other systems adopted on-farm, animals in a more intensive environment can increase the infection pressure leading to the risk of disease and lost productivity. Linked ever more closely to this issue is the fact that we need to continue putting downward pressure on the use of antimicrobials to treat infections, helping to combat the huge issue of antimicrobial resistance that we are facing globally.
